2007 United Way Campaign
Brothers and Sisters; I am this year's labor representative for our United Way of Central Alabama's campaign cabinet. I am very proud to be able to do this for a variety of reasons. Number one and most important, United Way of Central Alabama supports agencies here in our community that offer vital services to our fellow union members every day. Here at CWA we have had many members receive services from United Way agencies; members who have been victims of fires and tornados, the American Red Cross was there to assist them. Members whose children have suffered serious illness, Childrens' Hospital was available to them, and members of CWA who have received services from the Alabama Kidney Foundation. I could go on and I know you could tell similar stories of your members and their families. Another important reason for me is I believe that we as union leaders all share one particular trait and that is we have a passion for helping people. I believe United Way is not only a service for our members but also a service to our communities. Another reason I am a supporter is personal. You see, I am a mother whose son was born with cerebral palsy. With the support of many different United Way agencies, today my son is 37 years old, a father, and employed. Through their support, he has become an independent man. I would ask you to do two things for this years United Way campaign. The first would be to encourage your members to contribute at their workplace. Workplace giving makes up the overwhelming majority of the United Way campaign. Every contribution counts no matter the size. Second I would ask your organization to make a contribution. Terry Davis, our AFL-CIO Community Services Liaison at United Way will be happy to come and speak to your group and pick up your contribution. You can e-mail him, tdavis@uwca.org or call him at 205-458-2051 to make arrangements. Thank you for your past support and thank you for what you will do again this year. Together we can make a difference. Mark your calendar: United Way Labor Kick-off is Thursday, September 20, 2007! |
